Battle 4 Christ is on in Athens
Four Tennessee cities have been chosen to host a contemporary Christian band competition that could lead to a Nashville recording deal for the winner

By Ron Clayton jwalton@timesfreepress.com

ATHENS, Tenn. — The Battle 4 Christ is on this weekend at Athens Junior High School, and a dozen Christian bands compete for a shot at a recording contract.
Band battles are scheduled for Feb. 28 at Keith Memorial Church in Sweetwater, March 28 in Chattanooga and April 25 in Murfreesboro. Venues will be announced later.
Semifinalists will be chosen in early May and the Final Battle will take place May 30 at Cross Fest in Knoxville. The sponsor is the Knoxville Christian Music Connection. The winners will headline at Cross Fest and Kentucky’s Ichthus Christian Music Festival in June.
The Tennessee event is among 15 festivals whose winners will compete in Nashville for the Word Records deal.
Local sponsor Mark Hutchinson, who owns Legacy Recording Studios in Athens, said he will give the local winners recording time in his Nashville-quality recording studio.
“I wanted to create venues for contemporary Christian music,” Hutchinson said of the contest. “I was in a Christian rock band in Murfreesboro, and we had trouble finding places to play.”
He said bands from as close as Georgia and Kentucky and as far away as New Jersey are scheduled to play. Styles vary from straight contemporary to alternative to heavier rock.
The Ichthus Festival will have a booth at the Athens event, and festival director Doug Baker said he’ll be handing out some Tshirts and free tickets.
“We do a lot of these events to give bands an opportunity to play,” Baker said. Record deal at stake in Christian band competition

Eric Speck, owner of Ace Fu Records and a manager at Island Def Jam Records, home to music giants like The Killers, Mariah Carey and Ne-Yo, knows a thing or two about the challenges of the music industry.
“It’s extraordinarily difficult,” Mr. Speck said. “Being good isn’t good enough. You need to be something sincere, something special — great and different.”
So when an opportunity like Battle 4 Christ, a Christian band competition sponsored by Legacy Productions in Athens, Tenn., comes about, local artists jump at a rare chance to skip past some of the obstacles to success.
The first of four preliminary rounds of Battle 4 Christ 2009 — the winner of which will land a recording deal with Nashville’s Word Records — was held at Athens Junior High on Feb. 7.
A dozen regional contemporary Christian bands competed head-tohead in an eighthour war of rock.
Legacy Productions owner Mark Hutchinson said he was pleased with the event turnout.
“(It was) a smashing success, especially since bands came from as far away as Nashville,” he said. “We are giving those bands an opportunity to play in front of a larger venue, while sending their message to larger crowds.”
Blue City Band, a local band and crowd favorite, won the Athens event.
That win guaranteed Blue City an appearance at the three-day Ichthus Festival this June in Wilmore, Ky. and a chance to open for the headliner at Knoxville’s CrossFest on May 30.
Blue City Band consists of John Gordon (rhythm guitar), Joseph Gordon (bass), John Knox (drums) and Brent Womac (vocals).
“Battle 4 Christ was very inspiring because our band was in the middle of calling it quits; but after Saturday, we’re going full force,” Joseph Gordon said.
Winning in Athens was only the first step, however.
The Athens event was the first of four Battle 4 Christ opening-round events around the state. The next three will be Saturday in Sweetwater, March 28 in Chattanooga and April 25 in Murfreesboro.
Before it can land a development record contract with Word Records, Blue City Band will compete May 2 at the semifinals in Loudon, Tenn., against 11 other top bands from the Athens and Sweetwater openinground events. On May 9, the top 12 bands from the Chattanooga and Murfreesboro contests will compete in a second semifinal round.
The final battle between 12 semifinalists chosen in those two contests will take place May 30 at CrossFest in Knoxville.
Kevin Ward, co-owner of Nashville’s Vine Records and a judge at the final battle, said he realizes the hard work it takes to be a successful band.
“If it took one thing to make it in music, then everyone would do it,” said Ward. “It takes a lot of things seemingly trivial to add up.”
Alex Brown is a student at Rhea County High School.
